Napolitano Calls Republican War Resolution a Charade

(Washington D.C.)- Congresswoman Grace F. Napolitano (CA-38) today criticized the Republican attempt to hijack a War Resolution, identifying it as a political stunt that minimizes the importance of the real debate about the Iraq War. The Congresswoman voted “NO”, along with the majority of Democratic House members, on the shell of a resolution that calls for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq.

The Congresswoman said that the Republicans are hiding their recent failures in their budget proposals and in the failed Iraq War strategy with this charade of a resolution.

“The Republicans have introduced a sham resolution before Congress breaks for Thanksgiving, typical of their efforts to dodge any substantive discussion about the war,” said Napolitano. “We all applaud Rep. John Murtha (D-PA) for starting a true and real debate about a plan to withdraw troops from Iraq in a timely, responsible manner.”

Congressman Murtha has introduced an exit strategy proposal that acknowledges there has been no progress toward stabilizing Iraq or the region and making our country safer from terrorist threats. Our men and women continue to be killed daily. To date, almost 2,100 American troops have been killed and another 25,000 have been injured. More than $200 billion has been spent on this war in Iraq with no end in sight.

“We can no longer afford to continue to throw billions of dollars into the reconstruction when our nation is facing the largest budget deficit in a decade. Every dollar sent to Iraq is a dollar not spent on our domestic priorities such as hurricane relief, education, healthcare, and the solvency of social security,” added Napolitano. “Charity starts at home.”

The Republican Leadership has adamantly refused to bring Murtha’s proposal to the House floor for discussion and consideration, instead proposing their own shelled resolution which they opposed. The measure was defeated.
