(Washington D.C.)- The House of Representatives is expected to approve today $750,000 in funding requests by Congresswoman Grace F. Napolitano (D-Norwalk) for the 38th District, and an additional $6.2 million in requests that the Congresswoman supported with her House colleagues. The funding will provide vital upgrades in ongoing local community projects, and is part of the 2007 Transportation, Treasury, and HUD Appropriations bill, which now moves to the Senate and to the President.
Funds requested by Congresswoman Napolitano:
- $400,000 for the City of Pico Rivera’s Rosemead Boulevard and Slauson Avenue Intersection Improvement Project. The project will replace pavement and rehabilitate the sidewalks in this intersection of two heavily traveled city thoroughfares.
- $200,000 to Rio Hondo College for their Public Transportation Promotion Pilot Program. The College will use the funding to provide free use of public transportation for all full-time students. Additionally, they will construct closer bus stops to campus and increase shuttle bus use from local transit agency bus stops into campus. At the end of the two-year pilot, students will hold an election to consider a self-assessed transportation fee.
- $150,000 for the City of La Puente and the Hacienda-La Puente Unified School District’s construction of a Nature Education Center and Nature Walk that will provide the local community as well as students of the surrounding school districts the opportunity to learn about critical environmental issues. Interactive displays pertaining to the environment, conservation, and resource protection will be installed.
Funds supported by Congresswoman Napolitano:
- $2.7 million for the Municipal Transit Operators Coalition which includes the cities of Montebello and Norwalk, as well as Commerce, Culver City, Gardena, Santa Monica and Torrance. The funding is split between all 7 member cities, and was coordinated with Representatives Waxman, Waters, Harman, Watson, and Roybal-Allard.
- $1.5 million for the Alameda Corridor East grade separation project that continues construction work on railroad crossing safety improvements, and was lead by Representative Dreier.
- $2 million for Foothill Transit’s construction of park and ride facilities that encourage transit use during daytime peak rush hours, which was also lead by Representative Dreier.
“This federal funding is vital to help ease major traffic impacts, assist in the improvement of community resources, and enhance the educational opportunities in our local neighborhoods,” said Congresswoman Napolitano.
