Napolitano Honors Winners of Congressional Art Contest

(Washington D.C.)- Congresswoman Grace F. Napolitano is extremely pleased to honor three high school students from Pomona and Montebello as the top winners of the Annual Congressional High School Art Competition.

“The commitment of these three students and the numerous other students who participated in this year’s competition is truly remarkable,” said Napolitano, D-Norwalk. “Far too often, we only see on TV and read in our newspapers about the negative things are youngsters are doing. This is our small effort to highlight the talents and skills of our local youth.”

Stephanie Ignacio of Diamond Ranch High School in Pomona won first prize with her computer graphics work entitled “Reflections.” The Congresswoman will present her a $100 prize at Saturday’s awards ceremony and reception. Ignacio and a parent or guardian will also fly to Washington in July, when they will see her work displayed in the halls of the U.S. Capitol alongside other winners of Congressional art contests around the nation.

Anthony Azour of Montebello High School captured second prize for his charcoal work, “In The Moment.” Napolitano will present him with a $75 prize on Saturday and display his work in her Washington, D.C., office. Ruben Delgado of Pomona High School will receive a $50 prize, and his pen and ink work called “Shadow Car” will be displayed in the Congresswoman’s Santa Fe Springs office.

In all, more than 150 art pieces were created by students from 11 high schools in the 38th Congressional district. Carmela Garcia, Program Coordinator of the Centre for the Arts in Pico Rivera; Felicia Mindardi, Hacienda-La Puente Unified School District board member; and Christina Ochoa, Gallery Director of Self-Help Graphics in East Los Angeles met on Wednesday to select the overall winners as well as three winners of Judges’ Choice awards and six Honorable Mention recipients.

The ceremony and awards reception will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 21, at the School of Arts & Enterprise in Pomona.
