Napolitano Announces 38th District
Art Contest Winners

(Santa Fe Springs, CA)- Rep. Grace F. Napolitano (D-Norwalk) today congratulated winners of this year’s 25th annual High School Congressional Art Contest.  Entitled “An Artistic Discovery,” the competition highlights top artistic talent among high school students in congressional districts nationwide.

Three high school students from Pico Rivera and Pomona were honored for their outstanding submissions in this year’s competition.

“This contest provides an excellent opportunity to recognize the creative talents of high school students in our district,” remarked Napolitano, D-Norwalk.  “The extraordinary work by these students serves as a reminder of the positive things they can accomplish when given the resources and opportunity to achieve.  We need to highlight more often the great things our students do.”

Cesar Salas, a junior at El Rancho High School in Pico Rivera, received the first place prize in this year’s competition.  His untitled work, a stunning pencil on canvas design, is to be displayed for thousands to see in the halls of the U.S. Capitol.  It will win him a Congressional certificate of recognition, a $100 award, and an opportunity to join other student artists from across the nation at a reception in Washington, D.C.  Jose Carochure, a student at Pomona’s Garey High School, took second prize for his unique chalk depiction entitled “Self Portrait.”  Napolitano will present him with a $75 prize and display his work in her Washington, D.C. office.  Lacy Taylor captured a $50 prize for “Heavenly Holiday,” a chalk portrait that will be displayed in the Congresswoman’s Santa Fe Springs office.

Three judges from the community reviewed over 160 art pieces from 9 high schools.  Six students received honorable mentions, including Steve Obregon from El Rancho, Laura Chagolla from Garey, Devin Koba from Los Altos, Anna Nguyen from Pomona, Miguel Majih and You Tengara, both from Diamond Ranch.  Laura Flores from Nogales, along with Mario Acosta and Robby Flores from El Rancho, received the Judge’s Choice award.  Students from Montebello High, Norwalk High, and Pomona’s School of Arts & Enterprise also participated.

The ceremony and awards reception will be held from 5:30pm-8pm on Friday, May 12, at the Santa Fe Springs City Hall Lobby, in Santa Fe Springs, CA.
