Napolitano Selected to Lead Congressional Hispanic Caucus

Rep. Grace F. Napolitano, (D-Norwalk) was unanimously elected Wednesday, November 17 to chair the Congressional Hispanic Caucus for the 109th Congress which convenes in January.

“I am honored that my colleagues have entrusted me with advancing our goals,” commented the Congresswoman who currently serves as the First Vice-Chair of the Caucus.

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus is dedicated to providing a national legislative voice for the rapidly expanding Hispanic communities across the country.  It also works to improve the conditions of Hispanics through a full range of legislative initiatives and serves as a forum for Members to monitor legislative, executive and judicial actions impacting Hispanics.  Key issues for the Caucus have included health disparities, support for Hispanic small businesses, relations with Latin America, immigration reforms, affordable housing and quality education.

Congresswoman Napolitano said she is enthusiastically looking forward to serving a two-year term as Chair and especially working with her diverse and talented colleagues to ensure that the Caucus’ priorities reflect the needs of the Hispanic community.  “With the election of John Salazar of Colorado and Jim Costa of central California, the Caucus will now have a total of 22 members and an opportunity to make even greater progress,” she noted.

“I am also very pleased with the unanimous election by acclamation of Rep. Joe Baca (D-Rialto) as First Vice-Chair, Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-Tucson) as Second Vice-Chair and Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-Los Angeles) as Whip.  These are dedicated, active Caucus members, and they will be tremendous assets,” concluded Napolitano.
