Napolitano Discusses Prescription Drugs at Norwalk Senior Center

Congresswoman Grace Napolitano (D-CA38) visited the Norwalk Senior Center today to discuss with local seniors how Congress is addressing the high cost of prescription drugs.  “It is a pleasure to be with my seniors today.  I have had long discussions with my colleagues regarding the different prescription drug bills.  It is important that we pass bills to reduce your prescription drug costs because you deserve it,” Napolitano stated.

She continued to discuss the Medicare prescription drug bill, which is currently being finalized by a House-Senate conference committee.  “I voted against the recently-passed House bill because it required seniors to purchase private insurance plans.  Private plans are just that—PRIVATE!  We have no way to make sure that they provide our seniors with the coverage they need at prices they can afford.  I know that you want, need and deserve comprehensive prescription drug coverage through Medicare,” Napolitano explained.

“I joined my colleagues in sending a letter to the members working on a final version of a prescription drug benefit to ensure lower or no co-pays for low income seniors in both Medicare/Medicaid and comprehensive drug coverage through both programs.  We also urged that the final bill include provisions about outreach and enrollment to make sure that all seniors, even those who have limited English-speaking ability, understand the benefits they are entitled to and how to access them,” the Congresswoman continued.

Napolitano also touched upon the other major piece of prescription drug legislation passed by the House before the August recess.  “I voted for the drug reimportation bill because there is a huge disparity between the costs that people in other countries pay for their medications and what our seniors pay for the same drugs.  There are many seniors who already get their medication from other countries because it is cheaper.  I want all seniors to have access to lower cost prescription drugs in a safe and legal manner,” Napolitano commented.

The Congresswoman concluded her visit by assuring the seniors she would continue her work to provide affordable prescription drugs to all seniors.  “You have worked hard all your lives, and you deserve it.  Making sure that all seniors are included in a comprehensive Medicare prescription drug benefit is what we must do to say ‘we care,’” she concluded.
